Collegio San Luca – A. Barelli

Presentation

The College of St. Luke – Armida Barelli recalls, in its double name, two important figures: St. Luke, medical evangelist, patron of doctors of medicine, and Armida Barelli, founder of the University together with Father Agostino Gemelli.

By placing the human person and his growth at the centre of its aims, the College aims to provide a favourable educational environment capable of offering Christian-inspired training processes, in keeping with the founding principles of the Catholic University and the Formative Project for Colleges.

The formative team proposes to apply the constituent elements of the formative project in everyday life:

  • by encouraging the active and conscious participation of female students in the various activities promoted by the College itself, the intercollegiate bodies, the University and the Pastoral Centre
  • by fostering a relational quality within the community and the University with a view to a genuine experience of community life;
  • accompanying progressive empowerment through active engagement in commissions and in the various experiences proposed.

The College has single rooms with private bathroom, spread over the three floors of the “Istituto Adorazione del Sacro Cuore” building, in the immediate vicinity of the “A. Gemelli” General Hospital and the University Campus.

Cultural Commission
Contact person and deputy: Nicoletta Valerio e Benedetta Guarino

The Colleges, in addition to being places of study, are laboratories of training and cultural and social experience. The cultural commission endeavours to implement all those proposals and activities that help each college and the college as a whole to mature in this specific formative area.
For this reason, its members discern together the cultural proposals that most help the collegiate students, present in that specific year, to mature:

  • an intellectual attitude that goes beyond the boundaries of their own subject of study and their own Faculty, that opens up to reality in all its aspects;
  • a capacity for critical reading of reality, in its values and ambiguities;
  • an ever new search for truth illuminated by faith;
  • a serious preparation, with a view to the responsible and competent assumption of one’s profession;
  • a commitment to act as responsible subjects in the transformation of society;
  • an openness to and appreciation of all cultures.

Examples of some areas of commitment

  • making known the riches of our territory, its history and resources;
  • enhance and promote the activities organized by the University, the CEI, and the University Office of the Vicariate of Rome;
  • encouraging information, attention to what is happening and its critical reading;
  • highlighting certain anniversaries, celebratory days;
  • promoting visits to museums and exhibitions;
  • participation in theatre performances;
  • enhancing and promoting the activities organised by the Office for Culture and Universities of the Vicariate of Rome;
  • film forums;
  • outings, pilgrimages, trips;
  • in-depth studies on topical issues;
  • at the same time offering opportunities to be together around reflection on issues of common interest, encouraging critical and informed thinking on the part of each.

Liturgical Commission
Contact person and deputies: Sofia Fioretti e Annarita Memmolo

The boarding school is a clearly qualified environment for a confrontation with the Christian proposal. It proposes a path of experiential and intellectual maturation, in order to achieve a high moral profile and a harmonious integration between faith and life.
The liturgical commission endeavours to implement all those proposals and activities that help each collegiate and the college as a whole to mature in this specific area of formation.
It therefore works, in connection with the path proposed by the formation project, for the judicious and wise proposal of activities that promote it in the context of faith, bearing in mind the collegiate context with its needs and requirements for growth. The liturgical commission is responsible for promoting

  • a reflection on the transcendent dimension, on the question of infinity that dwells in the heart of man;
  • openness to universal values, to be made one’s own, to be translated into life and into concrete experiences to be shared, with a view to human brotherhood;
  • dialogue with people who live a different religious experience and with witnesses to our faith; Welcoming the challenges that culture poses in every “here and now” to the incarnation of faith according to each person’s vocation;
  • participation in the life of the Christian community by listening to the Word of God, in moments of prayer and catechesis, and in liturgical celebrations, coordinating and animating community events;
  • synergy with the University Pastoral Center (it encourages and fosters participation in the important periods of the liturgical year, pilgrimages, retreats, Spiritual Exercises, and, in general, all those forms that foster community and growth in faith);
  • knowledge of and participation in the initiatives of the local Church (Vicariate of Rome) and the Universal Church.

Charity Commission
Contact person and deputy: Agnese Montalto e Francesca Chicoli

With a view to actively collaborating in the integral formation of the person, the College sees itself as a place that invites one to care for others, that shapes the generous gift of self. Particular significance is attributed to the possibility of letting people experience, starting from daily life, the free gift of one’s own time and resources, in constant attention to one’s neighbour, whoever he or she may be.
The Charity Commission endeavours to implement all those proposals and activities that help each collegiate and the college as a whole to mature in this specific formative area.

The Charity Commission therefore undertakes to

  • promote the implementation of concrete acts of charity;
  • help all girls rediscover the value of what they have and overcome a self-centred view of life;
  • educate students about sobriety, gratitude, caring for things and people, respect for the environment and creation, and for work and the dignity of individuals;
  • strive to offer the collegiate community the opportunity to connect with charitable organizations; raise awareness of, collaborate with, and support volunteer organizations (radiotherapy department, emergency room, Community of Sant’Egidio, Villetta della Misericordia, CUAMM, prison, etc.);
  • live and stimulate a sapiential reading of needs, help each one to grow in the co-responsibility of taking charge of them;
  • promote solidarity and mutual aid within the college, among its various members, and with those who share our daily lives;
  • be mindful of the needs of the local community, the hospital, and the parish;
  • take to heart what is happening in the world and promote awareness of it.

Recreational Commission
Contact person and deputy: Marta Maggio e Dalila Cava

The Formative Project recognises in the encounter with the other a constitutive element of being oneself and a precious opportunity to grow in humanity.
The Recreational Commission works to implement all those proposals and activities that help each collegiate and the college as a whole to mature in this specific formative area.

For this:

  • it ensures that everyone can discover, by experiencing it, the beauty and richness of the encounter with the other, of being together in the gratuitousness of relationships;
  • it educates and offers tools to nurture, in co-responsibility, a serene, family atmosphere, where everyone finds space, listening, the possibility of knowing and being known;
  • stimulates one to value and welcome oneself and others, bearing in mind one’s wealth, limitations and needs;
  • it offers opportunities for recreation, fun, joy that intrigue and stimulate, that help to take a balanced break from the fatigue of study and to find refreshment and communion;
  • offers spaces and opportunities for fraternity, listening, exchange;
  • it coordinates the organisation of boarding school moments on special occasions, both those of tradition (Festa delle laureande, Christmas dinner, secret santa …), and those fuelled by the girls’ creativity and proposals;
  • makes herself available in the preparation of convivial moments;
  • knows how to be creative and proactive, makes sure everyone is involved;
  • animates through various activities, so as to meet the different needs: singing, dancing, board games, decorations, cooking competitions and much more, with the aim of involving and being involved, in an atmosphere of cheerfulness and light-heartedness;
  • providing hospitality to other students or groups (e.g., SISM, COI, CUAMM, etc.), to broaden one’s horizons and outlook. Maintains a family-like, collegial style, including in the organization of spaces, structured for sharing;
  • fosters team spirit, including through active collaboration in organizing parties and special events;
  • provides constant attention to former students (messages, birthday greetings, invitations at significant moments, frequent contact);
  • maintains a network of relationships with the University (Faculty, Assistants, Technical-Administrative Staff, Management, etc.) and the local community (Parish, Vicariate, Associations, etc.).

Logistics/Housing Commission
Contact person and deputy: Francesca Di Vincenzo e Chiara Saccà

Life in boarding schools involves experiencing co-habitation and daily encounters with other people. The environments, the tools, every logistical-housing aspect contribute to creating a familiar, welcoming environment, capable of stimulating belonging and fraternity.
The logistical-housing commission, taking care of the management of the common areas, endeavours to implement all those proposals and activities that help each collegiate and the college as a whole to mature in this specific formative area.

  • takes care of things and environments so that they may be welcoming to all;
  • takes care to ensure that what is needed is not missing and that purchases/replenishments are made;
  • coordinates the rota and cooperation regarding certain shared activities;
  • takes care of the instructions and information to be given regarding the use of tools and environments;
  • also pays particular attention to environmental education (waste separation, not wasting but sharing and reusing, revaluing simple or recycled materials, etc.);
  • makes herself available in furnishing, decorating, preparing environments in view of festivities, parties, boarding school events;
  • is creative and proactive in identifying solutions to problems/needs related to the use of rooms;
  • it encourages the collegiate community to reflect on lifestyles, daily habits, and the impact of our actions on the environment, educating students about energy saving and respect for the environment, and encouraging critical and responsible consumption behaviors.

Sports Commission
Contact person and deputy: Dalia Clemente e Benedetta Madarena

The practice of sport, and more generally education for a healthy and balanced lifestyle, represents an important and indispensable educational pathway, a privileged channel for experiencing certain virtuous behaviours and for the internalisation of certain values that are fundamental to a person’s psychophysical balance.

The sports commission endeavours to implement all those proposals and activities that help each college and the college as a whole to mature in this specific training area.

  • It is concerned with creating opportunities that promote sport and health;
  • It offers opportunities for training, individual and group sports experiences;
  • It takes care of information regarding fees and subscriptions;
  • Enhances the presence of the Educatt gym, with the possible involvement of a personal trainer or sports specialists;
  • Stimulates and proposes the offer of specific courses;
  • It accompanies and supports the IOC sports for the realisation of the collegiate games, managing the training sessions to make them effective and functional, stimulating participation, co-responsibility and involvement of all;
  • It undertakes to prepare and look after the material, venues and uniforms needed for these activities. It takes care that these are respected and returned;
  • It ensures that sport preserves the moral, spiritual and educational aspects that it embodies and which must remain intact. It ensures that inclusion, respect and communion are privileged objectives and are not threatened by unfair competition;
  • It teaches priorities, knowing how to carve out time for self-care, and finding a balance between activity and rest, solitude and companionship;
  • It teaches responsibility for one’s own development, encouraging “getting moving” for self-care, individual health, and environmental well-being (One Health). It emphasizes the strong dependence between physical, mental, and social well-being and the context in which we live.

Intercollegiate Organising Council
Monica Termite e Maria Chiara Alimenti

Intercollegiate activities, promoted in a climate of collaboration with the other Colleges, represent an important moment of sharing and confrontation.
Every year, a number of representatives are elected at the assembly, who take part in the Inter-Collegiate Organisational Council (C.O.I.), made up of various representatives (collegiate COI members, President and Vice-President of both the In Campus Colleges and the In Town Residences, a Pastoral Assistant, an EDUCatt representative).
The C.O.I. organises cultural events, trips, parties and sports activities that make the collegiate experience unique and provide unforgettable moments.
